Introduction

The Plant Breeding Division is the flagship of the Tobacco Research Board of Zimbabwe. It is responsible for the development and release of all varieties for local and regional use.

Objectives
1. To breed tobacco varieties with multiple disease resistance and adaptability to a wide range of agro-ecological regions capable of giving the highest possible yields.
2. To develop rotational grass breeds with high root-knot nematode suppression capability.

Kinds of Tobacco

Our research and development encompasses tobacco in the following categories:

1. Flue cured
004
This is the most popular kind of tobacco grown in Zimbabwe and more varieties have been developed in this category than all the others.
2. Burley Tobacco

3. Dark Tobacco

Tobacco Varieties and Resistances
Varieties developed by the Tobacco Research Board have resistance to a wide range of pests and diseases allowing them to be grown with minimum applications of pest and disease control chemicals. The following tables show the resistances of the available varieties.

National Variety Testing Sites
All promising varieties are tested at various sites in the three main agroecological regions of the country before they can be released. Testing sites are on selected farms and also serve as demonstration centres for farmers.

International Variety Testing Centers
The Plant Breeding Department also collaborates with other international tobacco breeding institutions and tests cultivars from diverse origins at Kutsaga. The varieties are evaluated for agronomic and disease performance under the same conditions. The map below shows some of the regional testing areas in Africa for TRB varieties.
